Ama Ansah, a senior here at HHS, is directing a short play called “Rupert and The 7 Russian Email Brides” this Friday at the Spring Arts Festival. She is one of the four student directors participating along with Dorrall Price, Dylan Norquest, and Emmett Copeland.
The story focuses on a desperate man named Rupert, played by freshman, Graham Rebhun, who acquires his “own harem” of Russian mail order brides. Then he meets Petra, a real- life Russian woman and Rupert falls in love with her. But trouble starts when his imaginary harem gets jealous.
Petra is played by freshman Victoria Giron, who is debuting as a leading role. The show is known to be rather frisky and seductive. “I feel kind of awkward having to almost kiss Graham,” spills Giron.
Ansah chose the play because she wanted to do a comedy and liked the idea of getting to work with a lot of actors.
“I found the play for free online and it made me chuckle. After Les Mis, I wanted to do something funny for my last play,” Ansah said.
She has enjoyed working on the costumes most of all, dressing the entire cast and even making some of the outfits. Ansah is planning on majoring in theater at University of Richmond in the fall, but will miss HHS.
“Rupert is my 11th show at HHS. I’ll miss the theater department, but I am excited to go to college. Spring Arts is the perfect way to end my high school theater experience, I think,” Ansah said.
