Maslenitsa, also know as “Butter Week” or “Pancake Week”, is a Russian religious and folk holiday. It is celebrated during the last week before Great Lent. On Thursday, March 11, the Russian Club went to Mosby Court to illustrate the basis of Maslenitsa.
“We hosted guests and made a short little presentation about Maslinitsa,” junior president, Saida Mammadova said. “A lot of people came that weren’t even Russian; it was awesome.”
Members of the club did activities with the kids, like play duck-duck-goose. Freshman Marik Chepelyuk interpreted for an elderly man who wanted to share some past experiences.
“I thought it was a privilege translating for the older generation,” Chepelyuk said. “At first, I was shy, but then I got into it and it wasn’t so bad.”
Mammadova said that her favorite part was the food. “Oh my goodness! It was all so good! There were bliny (thin pancakes) and this amazing cake and kompot (punch). It was like heaven in my mouth!”
Mammadova said of the event; “Dude, that was cool! I had a good time, and it was a great experience.”
