Unified basketball team receives surprise
Designed specifically for the Unified basketball team, navy blue quarter zips were given to the students as a gift on the day of their season opener against Turner Ashby High School.
The surprise started when students were led to the gym with no intentions of a gift. Special education teacher Lisa Long was part of the surprise. Long had the opportunity to see the students’ faces when they saw what awaited for them in the locker room.
“[The students] did not know that they were getting [the quarter-zips], it was a surprise. We called a basketball meeting and we just talked about the game tonight. We told them that we had a surprise for them, so we came down and the shirts were waiting for us,” Long said.
The quarter zips were given by an anonymous donar. Every year, the particular donar gives to different Unified teams around the area. As for this year, the Streaks were the lucky receivers.
For sophomore Destiny Lambert, receiving a new jacket will give her a chance to show off her Streaks spirit.
“I feel really cool and I really like them,” Lambert said.
With the school being in their second year of participating in Unified basketball, representing team spirit hasn’t been a problem. Students can now wear their quarter zips with pride, representing the Unified Streaks.
“We can’t afford to buy [jackets] for the teams, we do have uniforms, but that’s all we have,” Long said. “This is one more thing that they can be proud of and wear to show everybody.”
