It is not a pep rally at HHS without the pie, and it has become a good tradition here we have at HHS.This year, the event was very successful in gathering money for the Luke Hertzler Fund for Leukemia. $1,124 were collected in donations to see teachers get pied.
Apprehension for the event was the same as ever as teachers and students worried over who is that will get pied and who will have the honor to pie.
“ Anything that involves taking off my glasses and surrendering my eyesight is apprehensive,” librarian Bradley Walton said.
He and his wife, Cara Walton, were later pied at the pep rally.
Junior Destiny Arrellano also worried because she had to gather money to pie history teacher Mark Healy.
“ I thought it would be fun to pie him then he told me that he only got pied twice in the past 15 years, so I was worried. That mean that i was going to get pied if I didn’t raise enough money and I did not want to get pied. It was hard to raise money because everyone likes Healy and didn’t want him to get pied,” Arrellano said.
Sure enough, Arrellano raised only $1.30, so she did have to get pied.
“ I was told [I was going to get pied] right before the pep rally in Renaissance class. It [the pieing] was nasty and I did not expect it to go in my hair. I wasn’t embarrassed much, but I smelled like puke after school,” Arrellano said.
J.R. Snow seemed to think differently and took the whole event with a good spirit.
“ It[ the pieing] was fantastic. The texture of the pie exfoliated my face and I felt like a brand new man,” Snow said.
“ I take it as a complement because students know I’m willing to play. A huge complement,” Snow said.
Maybe that’s why most the money raised was to see Snow get pied.
“ I do everything at full steam or no steam. I was for real and wanted students to raise money,” Snow said.
Healy was also very confident.
“ I knew I was not going to be pied. I already had money to stuff someone else’s bucket,” Healy said.
Healy also had a technique to follow when pieing Arrellano.
“ Hit, push, and slide so the pie gets in the nose. I felt bad though after it because she was a cheerleader and had to cheer that night at the game. I also felt bad because I felt good doing it[pieing].
Healy believes the money did go to a good cause though.
“ It’s good tradition we have here at HHS. At TA, they have to kiss cows, so this [the pie event] is much better than that,” Healy said.
Students also had fun watching the event.
“ I liked it when the teachers got pied and I also liked it when Healy pied Destiny because Healy is gangster like that,” junior Zakary Kraimeche said.
“ I felt that we got some good pies in the face. I didn’t know teachers were going to pie students so that came as a surprise,”junior Abe Alvarado said.
We also raised a lot of money for the Luke Hertzler Fund which goes to help fight leukemia. That’s how you get pied HHS style.
