From Long to Short: A Hair Journey
November 30, 2015
I chopped it off. Recently I made a significant change to my appearance. I was looking at pinterest and my eyes were drawn to a particular hairstyle; a young woman with wavy brown hair cut into a stylish bob. Immediately I was obsessed, I looked through about thirty pictures all the same with a slight nuance in the style. I’ve always leaned more towards short hair but never had the courage to take action (thanks to a traumatic haircut in 2008). So after damaging my hair for the third time, from constantly box dying it (hair dye from CVS), my ends were unnaturally straight while the roots were curly. I didn’t want to give up my length, so therefore I tried home remedies to resurrect it back to normal. Weeks turned into months and there was no sign of my hair becoming healthy again. I decided the day before homecoming that I was going to cut off the dead ends, I booked a hair appointment that day. That’s when things went relatively downhill. Although the stylist was very friendly and chatty, she misinterpreted what I envisioned for my hair. Instead of just clipping the dead ends away( just past my shoulders) she made it into a blunt cut bob. The stylist was sporting a satisfied smile while I was screaming internally. My neck was significantly cold, and the curls just kept getting curly. It wasn’t until about a week after the change that I learned to accept my hair’s fate.
Having short hair has changed the way I present myself. I can’t hide behind a curtain of curly locks anymore, nor can I just put it up into a stylish ponytail. My hair has never been more healthy; the curls are actually bouncy! The dry time has cut down significantly and styling is a piece of cake. Although I do have moments where the mane needs to be tamed and is not behaving properly, it’s still much better than having it dead at the ends. Cutting my hair was a bold move that I didn’t decide on myself, but I am glad for the misunderstanding.
This transition from long to short isn’t new and is actually the newest trend among the celebrity life. Kylie Jenner, on the same night as myself, cut her hair into a blunt bob. Movie actress Jennifer Lawrence and Sarah Hyland from Modern Family both converted into the bob clan. I never should have been afraid to cut my hair, though I am still waiting for it to grow back to its initial position. I’m going to marvel on the fact that I am now the girl in that pinterest picture I repinned long ago.
