Which Wich finds the perfect spot in the ‘Burg

For business owner and family man Cary Jackson, watching people walk into his Which Wich in Harrisonburg and hearing raves about the “amazing food” as they leave gives a feeling of “finally.”

“We started looking for a location four and a half years ago and it’s taken this long to find one,” Jackson said.

In the time span of finding the “right” location in Harrisonburg for the specialty sandwich shop, Jackson went on to open a Which Wich in Charlottesville, Virginia. That location has been open for about three and a half years. Jackson is a Harrisonburg/Rockingham County native, so opening a store in town is more convenient.

“I live in Dayton so it’s a close proximity and a great area,” Jackson said.

Finding a building for his Which Wich was not the only thing Jackson took time on. Jackson took a longer time choosing employees for his business to ensure their proper fit and look for the atmosphere of Which Wich.

“We hired 30 out of 250 applicants. We wanted to make sure we found the right people! The right personality, the right smile,” Jackson said.

Which Wich opened Monday, March 16 on Deyerle Avenue (in between Dunkin Donuts and Buffalo Wild Wings) and Jackson feels it’s like no other.

“What makes Which Wich unique is the total customization. We have something for everyone with each of the categories,” Jackson said.

Which Wich offers ten different choices of “wiches” and salads including ham and pork, chicken, turkey, beef, seafood, etc. Some names of “wiches” are “Shrimp Po’ Boy” with shrimp, coleslaw and pickles,“Grinder” with Italian meats, the current “Wich of the Month” Barbeque pulled pork, and “The Wicked”– a “wich” with five meats and three cheeses.

The store is designed so that the customers pick up a paper bag (labeled with their sandwich or salad of choice) and red Sharpie at the entrance. They write on the bag which toppings and extras they would like. After customers have filled in their choices the bag goes to the cashier who hangs it on a suspension line where other employees begin creating the “wich.”

Jackson will do whatever it takes to guarantee his customer’s have a great time at Which Wich.

“I truly believe it’s all about providing an experience for the customers,” Jackson said.
