Students take SAT for the first time
March 16, 2015
On Saturday, March 14th, HHS students nervously piled into the testing rooms. It was early, the same time as a regular school day, but sleep wasn’t the only s-word on their minds. The SAT, a test required for admission to most colleges, is something many students spend months preparing for.
Junior Jessica Barranco was not one of those people.
“I was more going into this one to see how it is, and maybe in June or the beginning of next year I’ll take it more seriously,” Barranco said. It was her first time taking the test, and was relieved to find it was easier than she expected. Barranco struggled with the prompt, but otherwise felt the SAT was straightforward.
“I felt like 25 minutes was a bit too short to write an essay,” Barranco said. The SAT is broken into ten sections; some are twenty minutes and one ten, but most are twenty-five minutes.
“I’ll take it [the next test] more seriously. I’ll have a better idea of what it’s like,” Barranco said.
Junior Marjorie Bonga prepared a little to take her first SAT, but not a lot.
“I went to Barnes and Noble with [friends] and studied math, because that was our worst subject,” Bonga said. While she did a bit more studying, Bonga was also relieved to find the test easier than she had anticipated.
“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but I definitely struggled with the math because I didn’t answer some. The time limit was nerve-racking, so I didn’t think I did as good as I could have,” Bonga said.
Results from the SAT will be available on April second.
