HHS bands receive Virginia Honor Band title at assessment
March 14, 2015
The HHS Concert and Symphonic bands participated in the regional band assessment on March 14 at Broadway High School. The assessment was conducted in front of a panel of VBODA (Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association) judges. Each band performed pieces they had previously practiced, as well as one piece they had never seen before – dubbed the sight reading piece.
The Concert Band received an “excellent” rating for their prepared performance and a “superior” rating for their sight reading, amounting to an overall “excellent” appraisal. HHS band instructor Claire Leeper conducted the group.
The Symphonic Band – the higher-tier performance group at HHS – earned unanimous “A” grades from the judges, for an overall “superior” rating. HHS band instructor Daniel Upton conducted the group.
Last November, the HHS Marching Band earned a “superior” rating at the State Marching Assessment. VBODA judges took an average of scores from the November and March assessment days, which resulted in a “superior” combined score. They awarded HHS bands the title of Virginia Honor Band for the third consecutive year and the fifth time overall.
We will add another one of these to the shelf after our success at concert assessment today! #VirginiaHonorBand pic.twitter.com/CwlWJ2WgIN
