This year the music and drama department has chosen to do “How to succeed in business with out really trying”, a satirical comedy about business. The Music Theater International synopsis of the show reads:
“From the authors of ‘Guys and Dolls’ comes one of the most delightfully irreverent musicals of all time. A satire of big business and all it holds sacred, ‘How to succeed in business with out really trying’ follows the rise of J.Pierrepont Finch, who uses a little handbook called ‘how to succeed in business without really trying’ to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive, tackling such familiar but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant ‘company man’, the boss’ whiny, nepotistic nephew, the office party, backstabbing co-workers, caffeine addiction and, of course, true love.”
The selection process for the show involves going through a lot of shows.
“Mr. Swartz and I read/ listen to/watch many shows, and try to pick the show that will appeal to our students and highlight their talents, and will be entertaining and exciting to audiences,” Choir director Beth Houff said.
The musical auditions take place in November, students interested in auditioning are required to prepare a one-minute monologue and have a piece of music from the show prepared.
“Students planning to audition for the musical should definitely take some time to prepare their audition. A one-minute monologue of the student’s choice should be memorized and rehearsed, and an audition song must also be learned. Rehearsal will be held in early November to learn the audition music, and it is recommended that all the students planning on auditioning take advantage of these rehearsals. My best piece of advice: There are students who will practice until they get it right, and there are students who will practice until they can’t get it wrong. Be a student who can’t get it wrong,” Houff said.
When it comes to the students that participate in the musical, the directors have a certain type of student they find works best.
“We are looking for students who are interested in expressing themselves through song, stage, and dance. We are looking for hard workers, team players, students with positive attitudes, and those wishing to be a part of something exciting and great. We are looking for students who want to be successful, and are not willing to settle for less than their absolute best,” Houff said.
