On September 19, 2014, a new movie by the name of The Maze Runner first appeared in theaters nationwide. From the young adult novel by James Dashner, the first in it’s series has been converted into a major motion picture film.
When the trailer was released over the summer of 2014, teens were waiting with anticipation.
Maddie Blackwell, is a critic and reader of The Maze Runner novel. Blackwell is a student who attends Harrisonburg High school.
“The book was very good, and I was excited to see how the movie would be expressed,” Blackwell said. She enjoys the action, love, and characters within the story.
“The actors chosen for the film were perfect selections,” Blackwell adds.
Brandon Stoner, is also a freshman who attends Harrisonburg High School. He has not yet read the novel of The Maze Runner, and hopes to see the film soon.
“I am excited, and will be going later this week to see the film,” Stoner said.
According to Jake Coyle from the Associated Press, The Maze Runner raised over $32.5 million over the first three days of its release.
“The income does not surprise me,” Stoner said.
In The Maze Runner film, Dylan O’Brien plays as Thomas, the main character in the story. O’Brien leads a team into a futuristic, dystopian, and mysterious setting. Each cast member works and collaborates to escape the maze.
Rose Copeland, a freshman viewer from HHS, shares what she had learned from the movie. “The Maze Runner movie is focused on how important loyalty is to peers in difficult situations,” Copeland said. “It also shows the need for leadership within our society.”
Copeland also explained that she enjoyed the film and thought that it was well-compared to the book.
“There were minor changes, but I still loved the movie,” Copeland said.
Although many have enjoyed the effects and action of the film, The Maze Runner caused some to be disappointed with the final product.
On social media, the changes between the book and movie caused many teens to be conversing.
On YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, teens have commented about the changes made when the book became a major motion picture.
Some of the scenes were cut, plotlines were changed, and some occurrences were different from how readers interpreted the book.
“The scenes that were cut were each important to the storyline,” Blackwell said.
As teens disagree with the changes, the director and creators of The Maze Runner film had only 113 minutes to work with. In this time, the filmmakers were forced to put as much information as possible from the book into the film.
Not only did this money pay for people’s salary, it allowed for the the sequel, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, to be created for next year.
According to Ryan Kristobak from the Huffington Post, the film will be released September 18, 2015.
Teens on social media, are already discussing their thoughts towards the film; and so far, no movie details have been announced.
