Students sign up for blood drive to save lives

Senior Kaleb McAfee donated blood at the most recent blood drive.

Twice a year at HHS students 16 years old and above have the opportunity to give blood.

The most recent blood drive was April 19. Giving blood help others who need it, and could save up to three lives. Sophomore Rachel Cavoto’s donated today for that very reason.

“I felt like since all this stuff happened in [the Boston Marathon Explosion] and [the West Texas explosion] that people needed this. My body can make more so there is no reason not to,” Cavoto said.

There are some requirements to giving blood at the Virginia Blood Drive, including a variety of screenings and questions.

“We test iron and vital levels, blood pressure, and temperature. We also ask a series of questions, like ‘Are you in good health?’ and others,” a phlebotomist at the Virginia Blood Drive said.

“I’m giving blood to make a difference, I guess. To help people who need it,” senior Zach Baxter said.

If you are in good health, 16 years old or above and pass the requirements to give blood, you are eligible to give at the next blood drive.
