Opinion: “Talking” has many implications, but no real definition

Talking can be defined as pre-dating, but is basically just flirting. Flirting is ikllustrated in the painting above, aptly named The Flirtation. Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.

Dictionary.com defines the word talking as “to communicate or exchange ideas, information, etc., by speaking.”  Makes sense, right?  Apparently dictionary.com has not updated its slang terms recently.  If you ask any high school student, the word talking has two separate meanings.  There’s the dictionary.com definition, and then there’s the other one.  What is the 2nd meaning exactly?

Junior Kendall Bailey said it was “pre-dating.”
“When two people send cute text messages everyday, and are constantly communicating,” junior Kerri Hofacker said.
“When people like each other a lot but don’t have the balls to break the ice and make it official,” junior Max Johnson said.
“It’s the step before dating,” sophomore Megan Miller said.
“Nobody really knows.  It’s the most awkward thing,” junior Robby Ross said.
“Talking is when everyone knows you’re off the market, but you aren’t dating,” senior William Imeson said.
Based on the comments, I have put together my own definition.  Talking is a time between a guy and a girl where you communicate on a daily basis, you hang out regularly, and you aren’t dating, but it’s implied that you are about to.  Most of your friends know you guys are together, and you and that other person are considered to have a “thing.”
