Opinion: SAT prep classes help prepare for test

Opinion: SAT prep classes help prepare for test
The SAT is taken by millions of high school juniors each year.

When I tell most people that for the past four Wednesday nights I’ve been attending an SAT Prep Class from 6 to 9 I get a variety of responses.  Some people just give me a groan, not imagining having to sit for three hours through that kind of torture.  Other people just laugh, glad they aren’t me.  There’s also that person who smirks, and tells me how it will never help me, and that they were just going to wing it… yeah, let’s see how your scores turn out.

I’m not saying you have to take an SAT Prep Class to do well on your SAT.  By all means, I’m sure there have been plenty of perfect scores earned by students who never even studied.  That doesn’t mean an Prep Class would never help.  During this class students from around the area join me as we review the basics of Math (up to about an Algebra 2 level) and English.  For math the most important thing I have found is that you have to remember your fundamentals and always finish the easy problems first.  Skip the ones you don’t know and save them for the end, that way you get the most points possible.  For English the thing that I most need to focus on is vocabulary.  The people in charge of making the SAT are thinking that by the time students come around to taking them, they’re juniors or seniors.  That means you have been reading and writing for 12 years, give or take a few.  That also means your vocabulary should be fairly broad, so you need to drill vocab.  We take sample quizzes, tests, practice essays, and basically anything that you can find on the SAT, you will find in this class.  Although it may not be mandatory to take, it would be in your best interest to take an SAT Prep Class to prepare yourself for this monumental test.

It certainly helps but it’s not worth the money.

Taking an SAT prep class is a very individual choice, but in general I think it’s not the best investment. I’m not sure how much prep classes cost in this area, but I know that the price of some classes can get up into the thousands depending on the duration of the class and the organization providing it.

An NACAC study released in 2009 showed that prep courses only increased scores by around 30 points out of the 1600 possible on the then 2 section SAT in 2005. Moreover, no test prep companies have good research to back up any claims about point gains. There are too many confounding factors. Students tend to improve the more times they take the SAT whether they take a prep class or not, and diagnostic tests usually don’t imitate the difficulty of the real SAT well (sometimes they’re harder so companies can make inflated score gain claims). Also, there’s no telling whether or not the student could have gotten similar gains just by spending a similar amount of time studying on his/her own.

Granted, a prep class may improve the confidence of some students, and if that’s the case then taking a prep class is probably helpful. However, for the most part, they’re not worth the money.
