Why journalism?
– “[Tracey] Barr started the literary magazine and passed it on to me. I’ve always loved creative writing and art and photography, so I happily took on being the Imprint adviser.”

What made you choose this subject to teach?
– “I like that it’s more like a work place where students are learning and I can watch them be amazed by what they can create.”

Favorite journalism trip:
– “Last year in DC. [It was] the most useful. There were so many great speakers, poets, journalists, etc. It was fun to see how independent all of our HHS students were. I’m looking forward to Kansas City!”

Who are your journalism role models?
– “Magazines like the Sun, a literary journal, and Plow Shares. Also, Mrs. Kibler and Mrs. Strickler because they produce such great publications and inspire young people.”

What piece of advice would you give other advisers?
– “Ask for help from as many teachers as possible who already have experience advising- even teachers from other high schools. Go to many conferences and workshops, let students create the way they want to.”

Describe one student who really changed your life or rocked your world.
– “Natalie Warner. She is one of those amazing students who is always motivated to make things as beautiful as she can. Really inspiring. She will do amazing writing in life.”

What role do parents play on your staff?
– “They come to the magazine launch party to support their kids. They go to conferences with kids and purchase lots of our magazines.”
